TFE #008: 5 Practical Tips to Defeat Overwhelm In Your Business

Oct 10, 2022

Read time: 4.5 minutes

Today I am going to help you defeat overwhelm in your business and get you moving in the right direction.

Usually, when anyone feels overwhelmed, it’s as a result of one or two things:

  1. Doing too much
  2. Not having enough clarity to take action.

When this happens, people apply all their focus to the outcome. Instead of committing to the steps required to get there.

Become obsessed with the process. Not the destination.

Once you have the confidence of what needs fixing, it becomes easier to fix it. That’s what I’m going to help you with today.

Here are 5 steps to defeat business overwhelm:

Tip #1 - Stop blaming others

Take sole responsibility for everything you do. When only you are accountable, you’ll have the power to control your outcome.

If you can’t get clients, it’s down to you. Seek ways to fix it. This may be through education, upgrading your skills or repositioning your offer.

It’s not the economy, the market or that “people prefer in-person PTs”. It’s your inability to acknowledge the weak points in your business.

Tip #2 - Stay disciplined

Another symptom of overwhelm is fluttering from one thing to the next. It takes discipline to stick with something through times of discomfort.

"The difference between winning and losing is most often not quitting.” — Walt Disney

Don’t solve problems by adding more stuff. A new podcast or YouTube series may sound fancy, but it’s more stuff you’re adding to your plate.

This detracts further from the real problem at hand and (you guessed it): overwhelm sets in.

Tip #3 - Time block your week

We had a client who struggled to balance his face-to-face clients with his online business.

He would be halfway through creating content and have to jump into a session at his local gym. As a result, his business became stagnant.

This type of context switching is overwhelm’s best friend. Instead, I recommended he shared his diary and we blocked out his time to focus on the high-value tasks.

Here’s an example of how Ali Abdaal (productivity YouTuber) time-blocks his week:

Tip #4 - Understand your numbers

If you don’t have any clarity on the numbers in your business, you will become overwhelmed. Plain and simple.

Tracking your daily metrics will reveal things you didn’t even know were there. This is how you transition from a scarcity mindset to a growth mindset.

Once you know your numbers, you’ll start to control your business instead of reacting to it.

Tip #5 - Reverse engineer your goals

Every personal trainer wants paying clients. But, only a small number know exactly what to do to sign up paying clients.

At the start of the month, our students look at their data and know exactly what it takes to get to their income goal.

Once they know how many clients they need, they divide by the number of days of the month. This determines what their daily tasks consist of.

This level of detail is an ingredient of stacking monthly revenue. Without it, you’ll fall into the trap of always saying “I need clients” without knowing how to get them.

Those are the changes you can make to take your coaching business by the reins.

Remember why you started your business. It wasn’t so you could wake up every morning and stress about where the next client is coming from. So why do you settle for that?

TL;DR:

  1. Stop blaming other people
  2. Stay disciplined
  3. Time block your week
  4. Understand your numbers
  5. Reverse engineer your goals
